Tool Buyer’s Guide to Mitre Saw Stands

What are Mitre Saw Stands?

Best Mitre Saw Stands in Australia

The purpose of most mitre saw stands is to provide support to your materials at the level of the cutting base. Essentially, they are folding tables, with strong load-bearing legs, and movable platforms for your saw.

Mitre saw stands provide accurate support for lengths of timber, sheet metal, or piping, making sure your angle is 45 degrees to the material, not 45 degrees to your surface, creating far more cutting possibilities.

What to Look for When Buying a Mitre Saw Stand

There are really just three factors that need to be considered with mitre saw stands; height, price and storage. Beyond that, the standard considerations of build quality, brand trust, and stability are important, but when it comes to choosing your basic specs, stick to the three basic rules:

Height

Some mitre saw stands have adjustable or telescopic legs, but in reality, most are well suited to most users with a table height of around 4ft. The important depth is the cutting depth.

Make sure the supports are the right height for your tool by measuring the tool from its base to the surface of its cutting plate.

Price

While mitre saws can cost upwards of $3000 for the best tools, tables typically cost from $60-$600, with a few high-end exceptions. Don’t focus too much on price though, as the real challenge is finding a mitre saw stand that will work with your own mitre saw.

Focus on depth and height, so you know your own tools can be accommodated. More expensive mitre saw stands tend to be universal with more adaptable guides and supports.

If you know the dimensions you need, you can often save hundreds of dollars.

Folding Vs fixed mitre saw stands

The big, big difference between mitre saw stands is static and folding. For me, I’ll always go for folding tables because our workshop is fairly limited on space, meaning every tool we buy has to earn its keep.

Folding mitre saw tables are just as sturdy as static tables and can be easily stored away when not in use. However, static tables, often with folding supports, are well proportioned, very stable, and often multifunctional (Also acting as a useful stand for pillar drills in alternative situations).

How to Use a Mitre Saw Stand

To set up your new mitre saw stand for the first time, choose somewhere with enough space on either side to accommodate your materials, with space to swing, and move around without restriction.

Once you’ve got a good spot, it’s time to get set up:

  1. Make sure your mitre saw stand is set up on level ground. Adjust legs if necessary.
  2. Attach your mitre saw to the stand top (most come with simple wing nuts to secure saws firmly and safely)
  3. Ensure the supports on either side match up with the level of the saw itself to prevent any bowing or unnecessary pressure.
  4. Connect your mitre saw to its power supply (battery or corded).
  5. Tighten all moving parts to keep them in place.
  6. Set up your materials and mark them out as normal (adjusting your measurement for the width of the blade).
  7. Clamp materials in place.
  8. Cut.

Mitre Saw Stands Safety Guide

Mitre saw tables provide an extra safety blanket when using mitre saws. These powerful tools can be dangerous with heavy heads and powerful blades. This is why it is imperitive to use a proper stand. Using an old wobbly chair or table or a plant stand will not provide a safe workspace.

Mitre saw stands make for a safer workspace, and generally prevent accidents, meaning there aren’t many safety guidelines arising from them that don’t already exist from the saw itself.

However, ensure your mitre saw is set up on level ground, with no risk of rocking while in use. Tighten all moving parts using the fittings provided with your table.

Mitre Saw Stands FAQs

Are mitre saw stands universal?

Not all mitre saw stands are universal, but most will fit the majority of mitre saws on the market today. It’s important to check the base dimensions for any mitre saw before buying a mitre saw stand and vice versa.

Do I need a special stand for a mitre saw?

While mitre saws can be used on any workbench, buying a purpose-made mitre saw stand makes cuts much easier and far more efficient.

However, for portable use, mitre saws can be used anywhere you can find a flat surface, provided you have the right supports at either end for your materials.

Can you use a mitre saw on the floor?

You can use mitre saws on the floor, but be careful to turn them off at the wall when not in use to prevent accidents. Mitre saw stands not only make cutting easier and more accurate, but they take some of the risk out of storing mitre saws too.

Can you store a mitre saw on its stand?

Mitre saws should be stored anywhere cool and dry provided they are safe and out of harm’s way. However, mitre saw blades can rust and degrade faster when left in the open.

While your saw can be stored on its stand, it’s worth storing the blade itself in a separate airtight container to prevent rust.
